According to a study, Biontech/Pfizer vaccination reduces the risk of infection with the Coronavirus Delta variant by 90 percent. She also protects 93 percent from a disease with symptoms in this virus variant, as a spokeswoman for the Israeli health insurance company Clalit confirmed on Wednesday.
Together with researchers from Harvard University (USA), data from 94 3,54 duplicate young people between the ages of 12 and 18 have been evaluated, it said in a message. These were compared with data from a corresponding number of unvaccinated young people. The results have been published in the "New England Journal of Medicine".
The data were collected between June 8 and September 14 this year, the scientists report; i.e. during the fourth corona wave in Israel, in which the Delta variant dominated the infection process. How the vaccination affects the risk of becoming seriously ill, having to go to hospital or dying, the scientists could not specify. Such cases are too rare in adolescents.
The Biontech/Pfizer preparation is almost exclusively injected in Israel. The country started vaccination of children from the age of 12 in early June. According to the Ministry of Health, around 61 percent of the 9.4 million inhabitants are vaccinated twice- 45 percent of the 12 to 15 year olds, 75 percent of the 16 to 19 year olds.
